Inset Text & Block Quotes

The Inset Text and Block Quote styles set off text visually from the rest of the main content.
Inset text
Inset text is used for short pieces of information that need to be visually distinguished from the main body of text.

This could be used for contact information or content that requires prominence, like an action that the reader may have to take.

Example

To be accepted into this program, the patient must undergo a full exam by a registered professional who will then fill out a referral form and submit it to the program for consideration. Patients generally hear back within 1-2 weeks of their form being submitted.

Inset text and block quotes should be used sparingly.  One study has found that inset text and block quotes tend to disrupt reading. People switch from reading to skimming after seeing one of these elements.

Block quote

Block quotes are always surrounded by citation marks and the source (if given) is written in italic.

  • Use block quotes only to break up long pieces of text (six or more paragraphs).
  • Do not use block quote inside an accordion.
  • Try to keep the quote to about three lines long.

Example

This is a paragraph style, lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

"This is a quote, lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua."
