The name “breadcrumbs” comes from the story of Hanzel and Gretel, in which two children use breadcrumbs to mark the way they came through the forest.
Breadcrumbs on the web act slightly differently than their fictional counterparts. They don’t show the actual path someone took to get to their current page, but instead show where that page exists in the site hierarchy. In this way, it is similar to the
left pullout menu.
This means that the first item in the breadcrumb list is the first level, the second item is the second level, etc.
